Help Us Tell Congress to
Keep Public Lands in Public Hands AGAIN! |
|
|
Members of Congress are ONCE AGAIN planning to sell off your public lands and increase the amount of logging, timber sales, and industrial development on them. This time, California is specifically in the crosshairs and YOUR beloved public lands are at risk of being sold.
Just a few weeks ago, your letters and calls helped stop 500,000 acres of land sales in the House version of this bill. This was a major grassroots advocacy win, shared by you and likeminded individuals across the nation, across partisan lines. Yet, these public lands sell-offs are back in the Senate bill, and even more extreme this time. We can't stop our advocacy now; we need your voice! |

The above advocacy portal specifically targets Representative Kevin Kiley. "Why Kiley?" you might ask: because advocacy organizations are being told our CA senators are going to oppose this, therefore we need to be targeting key republicans in CA to stand up for their districts and tell their colleagues in the Senate they will not vote for this bill if it mandates these predatory land sales without public input. Our Representative, Kevin Kiley, happens to be one of these key republicans, especially given the large swathes of public land in his district that are directly under attack in this bill. Please join us in telling our senators and especially our Rep. here in the Eastern Sierra, Kevin Kiley, PUBLIC LANDS ARE NOT FOR SALE!

What to say in your comment? |
Make your comments personal to you. What motivates you to speak for public lands? What do you love about federal lands, and why do you want to keep them in public hands?
Here are a few talking points that may help you get inspired: -
This proposal would put California’s extraordinary natural resources on the auction block. Congress selling off millions of acres of national public lands through a backroom process with no public input is a massive breach of public trust.
-
Selling off public lands is short sighted and irreversible. These lands belong to every American, not to the highest bidder at the whims of a political agenda. Once they’re sold, they’re gone for good–fences go up, access disappears, and they are lost to us all forever. Imagine discovering that your favorite camping spot was now fenced off!
- Americans overwhelmingly support the protection of public lands and have consistently rejected attempts to sell them off. Time and again, the public has made it clear: our national parks, forests, and open spaces are not for sale.
-
Outfitters, ranchers, small businesses, and entire local communities rely on public lands to sustain their livelihoods–and they stand to lose everything if this sell-off moves forward. At the same time, the trillion-dollar outdoor recreation industry, which depends on public access for hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping, would be gutted. This isn’t just an attack on public lands–it’s an attack on the people, jobs, and way of life they support.
-
This provision should be stripped from the final package just like it was in the House. House leadership ultimately responded to tremendous public outcry and rejected sell off provisions included in initial drafts of their Budget bill. Senate leadership, like leaders in the House, should reject any proposal that sells public lands as part of the budget package.
