Hello Blue,
October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, share trusted information, and remind every person affected by liver cancer that they are not alone.
October is also a month when breast cancer awareness dominates the conversation. But October isn't just pink. Liver cancer deserves attention, too. According to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), liver cancer was the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide in 2022, claiming more than 750,000 lives. Behind every number is a person, a family, and a story that deserves to be heard.
For me, awareness has always meant more than statistics. It means helping patients and caregivers access reliable information, hear from experts and one another, and feel connected to a community that understands.
That's why I'm especially excited about our upcoming HCC Lunch & Learn in Chicago on Saturday, October 24, a highlight of our Liver Cancer Awareness Month programming. This free event brings patients, caregivers, advocates, and healthcare professionals together for a day of education, support, and connection.
Bob and Winnie (featured in the photo above) will share their transplant journey, offering a deeply personal perspective on the liver cancer experience. Their story is a powerful reminder of the value of learning from medical experts and people who have traveled this road themselves.
If you're in the Chicago area, I hope you'll join us. This is a meaningful opportunity to gain credible information, ask questions, connect with others, and be part of the liver cancer community.
Throughout October, we continued our Love Your Liver outreach during Hispanic Heritage Month, with Dr. Humberto Gonzalez and Dr. Edward Mena presenting two special workshops. We're also preparing for my upcoming appearance on the Taste Life Nutrition livestream and sharing information about BEACON-HCC, a newly published treatment allocation framework that reflects advances in HCC treatment.
Looking ahead to November, our entire U.S. team will attend AASLD's The Liver Meeting in Denver, November 5 through 9. We're excited to connect with the liver health community, share Blue Faery's resources, and welcome visitors to our booth. Both Nicole, Blue Faery's new Patient and Advocate Navigator, and I will be speaking at the meeting. You'll find more information about our presentations and booth in the upcoming events section below.
Our Liver Cancer Community continues to provide patients, survivors, and caregivers with a place to connect and find support, while this month's blog spotlight features liver advocate Jessica Hicks and the power of turning lived experience into advocacy.
There is a lot happening at Blue Faery this October, but it all comes back to the same purpose: making sure people affected by liver cancer have access to knowledge, support, community, and hope.
