We were so happy to welcome Tamworth Rec kids to the lake on a steaming hot day to explore lakeside habitat, meet some of its residents, and cool off in the water. Scroll down for some sketches by the 6-year-old group. | Juno Lamb |
Summer is here, time to soak in sunshine and time outdoors with friends and family and all the good green growth and vibrant life around us.
We have three volunteer opportunities coming up in the next couple of weeks. Join us to clear trails this Sunday, June 29 (rescheduled on account of rain!), to pick up trash on Rt. 16 on Sunday, July 6, and to rip out some bittersweet on Wednesday, July 9. Build muscles in community!
Next week, help us prepare for the Tamworth 4th of July Parade. We'll be at Cook Library on Wednesday, July 2 from 10 AM–1 PM. Come paint a pollinator or fashion a flower! You're welcome to walk in the parade with us, as well, dressed up or not. Sign up for either HERE.
Scroll down for more upcoming events and to see some of the beautiful plants and critters we've glimpsed in the Basin over the past few weeks—including a newly hatched loon chick! |
Join us for our Annual Meeting & Cookout on Saturday, July 12, at 4 PM |
Please come to our Annual Meeting & Cookout at Runnells Hall, a chance to learn about our current work and the CLC 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, ask questions, and visit over a yummy supper. Bring your favorite salad or dessert! |

A loon chick at Chocorua Lake!
|
Good news at Chocorua Lake! The pair of loons nesting at Chocorua Lake have a chick. This is the first successful chick hatch on Chocorua Lake in five years. Another egg was spotted in the lake in front of the nest, so we are so lucky and grateful to have this hatch.
CLC Stewardship Director Debra Marnich took the picture above just a couple of days after the chick hatched. The loon chick is now a couple of weeks old, molting into a second lighter brown plumage and learning to swim longer distances underwater. You can read about and see pictures of loon chick development HERE. To reach adulthood, this chick still has to navigate snapping turtles, large fish and other predators, and human disturbance.
Please help the Chocorua Lake loons thrive. Read Deb's tips for helping loons and loon viewing etiquette HERE. |

The secretive spring salamander and other fascinating amphibians on Big Night |
CLC and Green Mountain Conservation Group had an eventful Big Night this year. The volunteer crew assisted and recorded more than twice as many amphibians crossing as last year, and spotted two new salamanders, including a rare and thrilling sighting of a spring salamander. Read all about it in this article by CLC Stewardship Director Debra Marnich and GMCG Education Coordinator Tara Schroeder! It was a record breaking Big Night season across the state, as well. Read a recap by our partners at the Harris Center for Conservation Education HERE.
