February's full moon is often called the Snow Moon, or Ice Moon in Celtic traditions. It's coming right up on February 1. The new moon is on February 17, right around the time of our two star programs; fingers crossed for clear, dark skies.
The Gaelic festival of Imbolc is also on February 1. If you pay close attention to what is changing in the outdoor world, you'll begin to notice signs of spring around now, though it may still be very cold and snowy! For instance, animals prepare for mating season, and buds start to swell on certain trees.
We heard tell recently of a Chocorua Lake Basin Imbolc tradition. For many years, local trackers, and one in particular, would go out onto the ice in the middle of Chocorua Lake and stay there until midnight on Imbolc, and return again the next morning, to watch and appreciate the changing animal activity at this time of year. |
This community knows how to do winter. |

The photo of the cleared ice rink brings to mind other Lake Basin winter traditions of yore, some depicted in the winter section of the Chocorua Lake Crankie...
