Hello [[INITIATIVE.AUDIENCE MEMBER.FIRST NAME]],
When Kay was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in 2008, the news was devastating.
Her doctors told her she had less than six months to live. At the time, the only treatment available for liver cancer was a transplant — but Kay wasn’t eligible. She had already fought and survived breast cancer just 11 months earlier, and the medication she took for it, Tamoxifen, had caused her HCC.
“I told my doctors to give me everything they had,” Kay recalls. “I had already beaten breast cancer; I wasn’t going to be defeated by liver cancer.”
In those early days, Kay went searching for a support group — something like the breast cancer community that had lifted her up during her first diagnosis. But she found nothing. There were no online liver cancer support groups anywhere — except Blue Faery.
“Blue Faery is the only organization that has real, true, valuable data for patients and families, and provides resources for research dedicated to finding a cure,” Kay says. “They provide accurate and valuable information as you go through your cancer journey.”
Today, more than 17 years after her diagnosis, Kay is thriving. She’s a former Air Force nurse, an active volunteer in her Maui community, and a passionate advocate for liver cancer patients. In November, she is attending AASLD The Liver Meeting®, where she will speak on the importance of ongoing surveillance, treatment options, symptoms, and quality of life for HCC patients.
Kay is also a monthly donor to Blue Faery — a decision she calls non-negotiable.
“My monthly donation is to ensure continued life-saving research,” she explains.
Because of donors like Kay, Blue Faery continues to fund critical liver cancer research, provide trusted educational resources, and connect patients and families who might otherwise face this disease alone.
But we cannot do it without you.
Your monthly gift ensures that patients like Kay have access to the right information at the right time — and that researchers have the tools they need to bring us closer to a cure.
