If my sister Adrienne had survived stage four liver cancer, she would have turned 40 years old on April 8. I cannot wrap my head around that number—40. What would she be doing now? Would she be playing bass in a band? Would she be a successful artist with her artwork shown around the world? Would she be a professor, because she loved school so much? (Her peers thought she would become a professor of religion.) Knowing her, probably all three!
But I don't know. I have no idea. She never learned to drive a car. She experienced love, but not the intimacy of a sexual relationship. She never finished high school. She never went to college, a goal of hers since she was six years old, and visited USC's campus. She never got to do so many things that most of us take for granted.
I ask myself often what she would want me to do with my life now. Have I done enough to ensure that her memory lives on? Have I done enough to improve the lives of liver cancer patients and their families? Have I done enough?
I would give anything to have my sister back. I feel her impact on the world would have been 100 times greater than mine. Being her parent was the greatest joy and privilege of my lifetime. I was and am so proud of her. She held her head high and didn't let cancer rob her of her spirit.
To honor her courage, I'm doing more things this year to celebrate her birthday. I'm going to the Monet to Matisse art exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art. I'm having dinner with my cousin, who lived with us when Adrienne was a toddler. I'm seeing the ballet Swan Lake at the Alabama Theatre. For self-care, I'm not working on Adrienne's birthday.
If you want to know more about Adrienne's story, from her point of view, I encourage you to read I'd Rather Be Dead Than Deaf: A Young Woman's Journey With Liver Cancer. She doesn't hold back. She shares her personal thoughts before and during cancer. You will also get to see her incredible artwork and why I consider Adrienne to be the best kid ever.
I love you, kiddo, and miss you every minute of every day. ~Your Sissy |
